The base fee compensates validators for processing transactions. On Solana, the base fee is charged per signature included in a transaction.

Exact cost

Every transaction costs 5,000 lamports per included signature. If a transaction includes multiple signatures, the base fee scales linearly with signature count.

The base fee is paid by the first signer on the transaction. Only accounts owned by the System Program can pay transaction fees.
